Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort in Chandler, Arizona

Posted by on June 6, 2012

I only have one teeny, tiny regret about our stay at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort in Chandler.

We only got to stay one night.

We were heading home the next day after our epic tour of the Grand Canyon state and had arranged a stay at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort for the night before we left. Our one and only mistake about this truly wonderful resort was that we did not get to experience it for a couple of nights. Or a week.

Or possibly a month.

Because it is seriously a perfect place to stay when you are in the area. It would be perfect for families, a romantic getaway or a girlfriends getaway – pretty much any sort of travel plans would work here! We turned off the interstate and assumed that we would pull up to the resort almost immediately but this is not the case with the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort. It is located smack in the middle of the desert and you have to drive about two miles through gorgeous, saguaro dotted landscape before you even reach the resort buildings. Because the resort buildings are located in this desert landscape, there are walking trails all over and you can also go horseback riding through this scenic area.

We had no idea what to expect when we pulled up, but we were just amazed at the beauty of this place. The resort was designed to be an authentic representation of the Gila River Indian Community’s heritage and culture. As soon as the buildings come into view, the colors, shape and design are reminiscent of the Indian desert cultures. We were constantly amazed at the detail that had gone into planning every inch of the resort to celebrate this heritage.

The resort includes the Aji Spa (much more to come about my fabulous experience there), the Whirlwind Golf Club, the Koli Equestrian Center with riding lessons, trail rides and outdoor events, four pools, tennis courts, jogging trails and plenty of indoor and outdoor space for events. The Ko’Sin restaurant is a wonderful place to dine and I’ll tell you all about our experiences there as well, but there are several restaurants to choose from as well.

The lobby is huge and open with big windows that bring in the lovely view of the landscaped desert grounds and the open desert and mountains in the distance.

Part of the gorgeous lobby area.

Don’t leave the lobby area without spending some time looking up at the ceiling because they have some incredible murals up there.

Just one section of the wonderful mural ceiling.

They have created the illusion of bringing the desert landscape right into the lobby area with the use of artificial rocks, a lovely waterfall and a cozy sitting area by the fireplace.

Feel like you are having a drink outside!

Great place to relax on a cold winter night!

We checked into our lovely and spacious room and spent a few minutes enjoying the incredible view from our balcony.

View from our balcony.

The resort has  500 rooms which are all inspired by the culture and beauty of the Pima and Maricopa Indians. The furnishings are also influenced by their traditions and each room has artwork prints influenced by their culture. Each room has a private balcony or patio and you might even see some wild horses roaming the desert in the distance!

We finally tore ourselves away from the peacefulness of the view and walked around the resort grounds, just enjoying the beautiful landscape.

So many lovely and comfortable places to enjoy the scenery!

We wandered around the paths and marveled at how they had incorporated the desert landscape, peaceful ponds and waterfalls and the local flora and fauna into the hotel grounds so that it conformed perfectly with the resort itself.

Walking paths wind all through the property.

Water is everywhere, ponds, waterfalls and small streams.

The pools are all gorgeous and would be great for families because there is a huge, 111 foot water slide built to look like ancient ruins.

One of the fabulous pools, overlooking a desert pond.

There are so many things to do here, you could stay busy for days but we only had one so we crammed as much as possible into that tight time frame. They kindly let us check in early so I could have a spa experience  and were also nice enough to treat us to a wonderful dinner and an equally wonderful breakfast at Ko’Sin. Our time was short but we enjoyed every single second of it.

So my advice when you stay at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort is to allow yourselves plenty of time. Experience all the things we didn’t have time to – and then tell me all about them so I can live vicariously through your experiences.

Because you are going to love it here.

Full disclosure: Our stay was provided by The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort, but as always, I will share my honest opinion about any travel experiences I have.
