#The Great Hair Product Project of 2012: The Westin Kierland Resort and Spa, Scottsdale, Arizona

Posted by on February 25, 2012

If you wonder why in the world I’m writing about hotel amenities, just read this post and then the review of the amenities at the Inn at Eagle Mountain, at the Hotel Valley Ho.

I was a little disappointed when I saw the amenities on the counter of the bathroom in our deluxe and quite, quite fabulous room at the Westin Kierland (more about our room and the fabulousness that is this place soon) because there was just two small bottles on the sink. Then I looked closer.

And realized this was the first place we had stayed that gave us mouthwash as an amenity. Mouthwash. Is that classy or what?

Mouthwash - how cool is that?

The rest of the amenities were neatly lined up in the shower, right behind a bar of green soap cunningly formed into the shape of a leaf.

Lovely amenities.

It wasn’t until I took a shower later that I appreciated not only how wonderful these products are but that this is the only place we have stayed where I can actually read the names of the amenities. Without my glasses. I can’t tell you the number of times I have squirted bath gel into my hand thinking it was conditioner and then tried to put it back into the tiny bottle with the tiny top where it was not actually designed to go back in because I couldn’t read the tiny print on those bottles. This is not a problem at the Westin Kierland. Look.

Is that GREAT or what?

Not only is the print easy to read, the amenities have a wonderful, white tea aloe smell that is fresh and clean and lovely. Apparently, they are products made just for the Westin hotels but you can buy them here – there’s even lots of other fragrances. Personally, I  have a whole handful to take home because our sweet maid came to the door to inquire about whether we needed anything earlier this evening. I was in the bathroom in my cuddly Westin bathrobe, actively lamenting the fact that I had used most of the products and we would be leaving the next day and I wouldn’t get anymore when I heard Tom tell her we didn’t need anything. After knocking him out of my way, I managed to catch her and tell her I would indeed like more amenities. I actually just meant one more of each, but she handed me a handful. And I kept them. Oh, you would have too.

Here’s how the amenities measured up.

Shampoo: The shampoo and body wash were both a pale, clear green so I really appreciated the fact that I could read the writing on them. The shampoo smelled nice and cleaned my hair but it didn’t really lather up very much. It left a nice fragrance on my hair and it dried clean, soft and shiny.

Conditioner: The conditioner seemed a little thin when I put it on, but a comb went right through my hair with no tangles, so it worked.

Bath Gel: The bath gel smelled nice but really didn’t lather up much at all. I actually had to keep putting more on my bath puff because it just wouldn’t lather up. I shaved my legs with it first and really noticed the fact that there was hardly any lather. I could barely tell it was even on my legs.

Lotion: The lotion also smelled nice but it was really thin and runny. I realize I have complained about the lotion being hard to get out of a bottle at another location, but there has to be a compromise between being too thick and too thin. This was definitely too thin.

Mouthwash: Lovely, minty and fresh – this was a first and I really enjoyed my little bottle of freshener!

So. Even though I adore the fact that I could read the writing on the bottles and the smell was quite lovely, because there were so many issues with the amenities, I’m going to have to grade them down a bit. Which breaks my heart because I adore this place. Seriously. A massage? Fabulous food? My very own private cabana at the pool? Check, check and check.

But they get bonus points for giving us mouthwash.

So, the amenities at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa?

-20 points for some issues

+10 points for having mouthwash

Final Score: 90%

The quest for even more perfect amenities goes on. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.

Full disclosure: Our accommodations were provided by the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa but as always, I will share my honest opinion about any travel experiences I have.
